Artist Statement

My ceramic sculptures reflect upon a variety of issues pertaining to the environment with a thoughtful, yet playful and ironic tone. I reproduce everyday common objects primarily through hand building and illustrating the surfaces with glazes to create narratives. My projects are inspired heavily by scientific research referencing issues such as trophic cascade, ocean acidification, phenological mismatch and melting glaciers.

Exploring issues focusing on nature is important to me for many reasons, most notably in examining my own responsibilities and how it shaped me into the person that I am today. However, my investigations speak to a greater issue of how human-nature issues in general are seen in society, historically and today. My exploration of nature addresses how our actions lead to a precarious future for the generations to come.

My works are representational forms often with a surreal twist. In using clay to create everyday objects, I play with the notion that there is more to the form than what is initially perceived. Beneath the colorful visage of these forms hides a complex and troubling reality that may not strike the viewer upon first glance.
